Validation Workshop on Internal Migration Data in Rodrigues
IOM Mauritius and Seychelles has organized a hybrid Validation Workshop on the (i) Study on Internal Migration Dynamics and (ii) Internal Migration Data Assessment in Mauritius and Rodrigues, within the framework of the IOM Development Fund (IDF) funded project “Strengthening Migration Management for Sustainable Development, with a specific focus on Internal Migration – Bouze Rodrig: pour une migration réussie”. The primary objective of the workshop was to present the findings of the study and the internal migration data assessment to key stakeholders from Rodrigues and Mauritius and to validate the report. This was accomplished through a structured presentation followed by interactive discussions, invaluable inputs and feedback to ensure the accuracy and relevance of the report’s findings and recommendations.
IOM also conducted a two-day workshop on 16 to 17 April 2024 in Rodrigues, with the aim to build the capacities of relevant stakeholders and equip them with the essential tools to generate timely data on migration flows between Rodrigues and Mauritius which could be useful in policymaking and programming on internal migration.
Present among the attendees were representatives from different ministries and other government institutions. The was implemented by the IOM in close collaboration with Rodrigues Regional Assembly (RRA) and the Prime Minister’s Office.
“One of the key insights from the assessment is the variance in statistical capacities across Mauritius and Rodrigues. This highly underscores the critical need for capacity-building initiatives aimed at equipping stakeholders with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively collect, manage and analyze internal migration data,” highlighted the Chief of Mission for IOM Mauritius and Seychelles, Ms. Alia Hirji during her remarks.
The objective of the reports is to provide the Government of Mauritius, including the Rodrigues regional Assembly, with up-to-date evidence and recommendations on how to establish an assistance framework for inter=island migrants, thereby being a key input into the development of an Action Plan on Internal Migration for Rodrigues. Additionally, the internal migration data assessment report provides a comprehensive overview of internal migration between Rodrigues and Mauritius and vice versa. It delves into various statistical and administrative data sources, identifies gaps and opportunities, and offers actionable recommendations to enhance our understanding and management of internal migration dynamics. Most importantly, the report is a response to gaps identified in the 2023-2032 Sustainable and Integrated Development Plan for Rodrigues (SIDPR).
