Strengthening Migration Data Management in Zimbabwe: A Successful Capacity Development Workshop
Nyanga - From May 17th to 19th, 2023, the Zimbabwe Department of Immigration, in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), received crucial technical support and funding from the United States Bureau of Population, Refugee, and Migration (PRM) and the EU-funded Southern Africa Migration Management (SAMM) project. Together, they organized a highly productive and informative 3-day workshop in Nyanga, Zimbabwe. The workshop aimed to strengthen the capacity of the Department of Immigration in collecting, analyzing, and disseminating migration data and statistics, ultimately leading to improved policy formulation and implementation.
The National Capacity Development Workshop played a pivotal role in enhancing the capabilities of both statistical and migration officials. By adopting internationally and regionally recognized instruments, the workshop focused on advancing migration data management systems. It aligned with the broader objectives of the Global Compact for Migration (GCM) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), while also considering the specific context of the Africa Regional Migration Programme (ARMP) and the Southern Africa Migration Management (SAMM) project.
The workshop empowered immigration officials with the knowledge and skills needed to generate, analyze, and disseminate reliable migration data. By providing policymakers with transparent insights into the existing migration landscape and potential future trends, the workshop facilitated informed decision-making and prioritization. The availability of accurate and up-to-date data allows policymakers to develop tailored policies and implement targeted actions that address specific circumstances and needs. Additionally, continuous measurement of results ensures policy adjustments over time, leading to better outcomes and improved migration management. The workshop's outcomes directly contribute to the objectives of the GCM and the SDGs focusing on migration. By equipping immigration officials with the necessary tools and knowledge, the workshop enables the collection, analysis, and dissemination of reliable data.
