Project SOREBE – Distribution of Income-generating Activity kits to the beneficiaries within the communes of Fitovignany and Atsimo Atsinanana regions

February 2023  - Between February 1 and 12, 2023, IOM Madagascar, under the auspices of the SOREBE project (Support for the Recovery of Off-site Camp Management for Internally Displaced Persons and Host Communities Affected by Cyclones Batsirai and Emnati) financed by the Japanese government, carried out a substantial distribution of income-generating activity kits to victims of cyclones Bastirai and Emnati in Manakara and Farafangana, in the south-east of Madagascar. The SOREBE project was established to support the off-site management of camps for internally displaced people and host communities affected by cyclones Batsirai and Emnati, with the aim of helping 5,000 beneficiaries who would have lost their livelihoods after the cyclones.

Manakara, Madagascar - On February 6, IOM Madagascar represented by IOM Head of Program Eliane KANGA launched the first distribution ceremony of Income Generating Activity kits to 124 beneficiaries. The event was marked by the presence of the donor, the Japanese Government represented by the Japanese Embassy, IOM's key partners: the BNGRC (Bureau National de Gestion des Risques et des Catastrophes) and the DRPS (Directrice Régionale de la Population et de la Solidarité), local authorities: the Governor, the Prefect, and the Mayor of Manakara. On this occasion, various types of income-generating activity kits (handicrafts, poultry farming, carpentry, masonry, catering, pastry-making, cleaning and laundry) were distributed to victims of the Batsirai and Emnati cyclones.

Farafangana, Madagascar - On February 8, IOM Madagascar, represented by Eliane KANGA, IOM Head of Program, officially presided the second ceremony of distribution of income-generating activity kits to beneficiaries in Farafangana. The event was marked by appreciations from the donor, which was represented by the Japanese Embassy, and by acknowledgements from local authorities, among them the BNGRC (Bureau National de Gestion des Risques et des Catastrophes), the Governor, the Prefect, the DRPS (Directeur Régional de la Population et de la Solidarité) and the Mayor of Farafangana. A substantial number of kits were distributed to a total of 345 beneficiaries in the area.  Various types of income-generating activity kits, such as handicraft, livestock, carpentry, masonry, catering, pastry, cleaning and laundry kits, were provided to victims of the Batsirai and Emnati cyclones.
