Press release on the sinking of a speedboat in Ankazomborona

ANTANANARIVO – The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is the leading intergovernmental organization in the field of migration and is committed to the principle that safe and orderly migration benefits migrants, host communities and countries of origin.

The Organization works in emergency situations to provide assistance to people on the move. In addition, the organization strengthens the capacity of governments to improve migration governance and respond to emergencies related to mobility.

Since 2020, a significant number of crossing attempts to Mayotte orchestrated by smugglers from the Malagasy coast have been intercepted by local authorities. Nevertheless, a considerable number of boats still cross the borders and are caught in the Mahoran territory or manage to enter the island.

Unfortunately, these crossings are not without risks and dramatic shipwrecks can occur. Indeed, during the night of 11 to 12 march 2023, a boat traveling to Mayotte and carrying 47 people from the northwest coast of the island, more precisely at Ankazomborona - Rural Commune of Beramanja, capsized. At least 22 people lost their lives and more than twenty others survived.

IOM Madagascar is saddened to learn of the tragic loss of life caused by this shipwreck and extends its condolences to the families of the victims affected by this incident. IOM is committed to strengthening its assistance to support people on these difficult journeys and the government in addressing issues of human trafficking smuggling.
