Migration Management Across 24 African Countries

With funding from the United States' Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration (PRM), and implemented across 24 countries in Africa, the Africa regional Migration Programme (ARMP) has successfully supported beneficiary governments in managing migration in a sustainable and humane manner.

Since its inception in 2018, the ARMP has garnered notable achievements across several Southern African countries. In Angola, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, the programme has played a crucial role in various key migration management initiatives.

Among the notable accomplishments are the development and launch of comprehensive national migration policies in Angola, Lesotho, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. These policies serve as essential frameworks to address the challenges and opportunities associated with migration, ensuring the well-being and rights of migrants are protected.

Furthermore, the ARMP has actively supported the review and adoption of vital legislation on immigration and anti-trafficking in Malawi, Zambia, and Lesotho. This legislative support has been instrumental in strengthening and enhancing the legal frameworks that govern migration, ensuring the prevention of irregular migration and the safeguarding of vulnerable populations.

In a commendable partnership with the government of Zimbabwe, the programme facilitated a simulation exercise that focused on responding to large population movements. This exercise enhances preparedness and response capabilities, ensuring efficient management in times of crises.

The ARMP has also contributed to regional collaboration, supporting the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Technical Committee on Labour Migration (TCLM) in evaluating the Labour Migration Action Plan (LMAP 2020-2025) and facilitating the adoption of the SADC Regional Migration Policy Framework (RMPF). By actively engaging with regional stakeholders, the programme promotes cooperation and coordination in addressing labor migration challenges.

In addition, the ARMP, in collaboration with Save the Children International, has actively worked on a Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Action Plan for Mozambique. This joint effort ensures that measures are in place to mitigate the impact of natural disasters on vulnerable populations, including migrants.

The International Organization for Migration commends the achievements of the Africa Regional Migration Programme, emphasizing its commitment to supporting governments in effectively managing migration while upholding principles of sustainability and human rights.
