Harare - The International Organization for Migration (IOM), handed over a project vehicle to the National Migration Coordination Directorate, located within the Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, Zimbabwe. The handover to the government institution is a contribution to capacity strengthening aiming at an effective coordination and efficient functioning of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Migration and the National Migration Coordination Directorate (NMCD).

Mr. Aaron Nhepera, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, expressed gratitude to IOM for supporting and strengthening the government’s effort in equipping the NMCD with the resources necessary to performing their function in addressing the various migration challenges, in a coherent and coordinated manner, taking into account the ‘’whole of government” approach.

IOM, among its other institutional strengthening initiatives, reinforced the technical and administrative capacity of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Migration and the National Migration Coordination Directorate, and other migration management related activities in the country within the migration governance coordination framework.

“Whilst IOM remains committed to continue working with the Government of Zimbabwe, in strengthening our technical cooperation in migration governance, we hope this vehicle will fully be operational to support other line ministries who are carrying out migration initiatives, especially in this crisis time of responding to the COVID-19 pandemic”- echoed by Mr. Mario Lito Malanca, IOM Zimbabwe Chief of Mission.

The initiative, in collaboration with the Government of Zimbabwe, is within the framework of the “Promoting Migration Governance in Zimbabwe” project which was implemented by IOM with funding from the European Union under the 11th European Development Fund. The project aimed at contributing to the establishment of a migration governance framework in Zimbabwe, that will support state actors to manage migration in dialogue with non-state actors and in a migrant centred, gender sensitive, rights based and development oriented manner.
