Celebrating International Women’s Day - Launch of a Book “In a Strange Land” written by a Mosotho female survivor of Human Trafficking
Maseru - On the 9th of August, International Organization for Migration (IOM) known as UN Migration Agency held a launch of the book tilted ‘’In a Strange Land’’ written by Ms. Mojabeng Mosebo in commemoration of International Women’s Day. The event aimed to sensitize the public on the reality of the human trafficking incidents in Lesotho through sharing of life experience. The event was attended by 41 participants (33 female, 8 male) from civil society organizations, NGOs, media and Government Ministries.
In her opening remarks, Principal Secretary Ministry of Home Affairs, Ms. Machabana Lemphane-Letsie, called on improved capacity of civil society and the media in particular and improved coordination by all sectors including Government and religious leaders to lead efforts to fight against human trafficking.
“The story of human trafficking is untold in this country. We need to do better to sensitise more people about it so that people can avoid putting themselves in places of danger. All of us need to collaborate to strengthen our resolve on this important fight.” - Participant
“Shatter the walls and break the silence, revive and give life to that which has died. Labelled an ex-convict, looked down upon, is it real? People are in invisible prisons.” - Excerpt from the Poem read by Mojabeng’s Daughter
“Mojabeng’s story is one of courage and reminds us of the value of human life. Reading Her journal entries made me emotional for it made me realise how vulnerable women and girls can be.” - Thato Mochone, Speaker
This event was supported through the generous support from the Government of Japan and its people through the project called “Counter Trafficking and Addressing Irregular Migration through Strengthening Border and Migration Management, Sensitization on TIP and Building Capacity of Law enforcement and Border Officials in Lesotho.’’
