Capacity Development Workshop on the Development of the National Referral Mechanism (NRM) Guidelines for Vulnerable Migrants in Eswatini

“To establish protection-sensitive processes, procedures and systems that provide a neffective response to vulnerable migrants in need of protection assistance within the mixed migration flows”. Between 13-14 February 2024 at the Happy Valley Hotel, IOM Eswatini, and the Southern Africa Migration Management Project (SAMM) supported the government of Eswatini through a Capacity Development Workshop on the Development of National Referral Mechanism (NRM) Guidelines for Vulnerable Migrants in Eswatini.

The main objectives of the event were to Capacitate participants on the Importance of National Referral Mechanisms (NRM) guideline for the protection of vulnerable migrants in Eswatini and to Develop a skeleton which will guide the development of the National Referral Mechanisms draft. The workshop was attended by a total of 25 participants from different stakeholders including government, international organizations and the civil society.

Through recommendations from the Migration Governance Indicator 2021, which aided to assess the comprehensiveness of migration governance structures and identified priorities on the way forward, development of a Migration Profile for Eswatini was highlighted.

On the 21st of February 2024, IOM Eswatini launched the 1st migration profile for Eswatini at the royal Villas Hotel. The profile will be an important tool that compiled evidence necessary for informed and coherent migration policy development and cross-institutional cooperation on migration in Eswatini and it will be a valuable tool to help the Government of Eswatini and its key partners to understand the dynamics of migration in the country. The launch was attended by a total of a total of 54 participants inclusive of the Technical Working Group that supported the development of the profile, the UN RCO,Ministry of Home Affairs Principal Secretary and other government representatives, different Eswatini media houses and the civil society.
