Our WorkAs the leading inter-governmental organization promoting humane and orderly migration, IOM plays a key role to support the achievement of the 2030 Agenda through different areas of intervention that connect both humanitarian assistance and sustainable development. 1980
ICEM's Council changes the Organization's name to the Intergovernmental Committee for Migration (ICM) in recognition of its increasing global role.
3 million migrants directly assisted by ICM.

1983
ICM extends the Migration for Development Programme to qualified nationals from African countries.

1985
Migration for Development Programmes are extended to Asia.4 million migrants directly assisted by ICM.

1986
One million Indo-Chinese refugees have
been assisted since 1975. -
1989
ICM becomes the International Organization for Migration (IOM) upon the amendment and ratification of the 1953 Constitution.
